Sorry, I'm 2000 miles away and I can't see your computer or how it is set up. Could you add some description?

How is your microphone connected?
Is it plugged directly into the microphone socket on your computer?
Is it plugged into an external microphone pre-amp?
Is it a USB microphone?
Is it comething else?

There is one thing my friend noticed. On his old computer, he sometimes recorded from an audio cd into audacity.
