You're not alone - Windows 7 gives a lot of people headaches when they try to record. The usual problem is that Windows 7 usually disables and hides the recording inputs. Regarding the "fading" after a couple of seconds, it is almost certainly as described by Trebor. Most of the problems that you describe are because of your sound card. On-board microphone inputs on PC's are really just made for telephone quality. My preferred method for recording bass/guit...

But some of these people charge you, then just send you a link to the Audacity web site. (and then expect someone else to provide technical support. These people are in my opinion parasites. E-bay needs a good scrub down with Jeyes Fluid.

If you import tracks into an Audacity project, they may be referenced by the project without being copied into the data folder. If you then move or delete such files, the audio data is no longer available and it will produce these symptoms. See here for more information: http://wiki.audacityteam.org...

That generally indicates that the clipping is occuring somewhere before it gets to Audacity.
In the 1.3.12 version, if you select "Show Clipping" from the "View" menu, does it show any red vertical lines across the recording?
