At the bottom of the screen (immediately below the graph) is a print-out with various information regarding the peaks at the frequency corresponding to the cursor position.

I was afraid you were going to say that - Windows 7 is not very helpful for recording, but there is a page on the Audacity wiki that covers most of the issues.
For Windows 7 you need to use Audacity 1.3.12.

As with Mac's the Windows sound system won't allow you to record both sides of a Skype conversation, bus as on a Mac, there is software that can get you round the problem.
