I've added "32-bit" to the topic title, as that was the crucial point of failure.
I'll lock this topic as it now has a clear solution.

Perhaps worth trying the commands using pipeclient's command line interface - by default, it prints Audacity's response to each command, so you can see immediately if a command fails.

The scrollbar is provided by your window manager. Depending on your window manager, you may be able to change the scrollbar style by using a different Desktop theme.
