Quite a few Linux distribution offer both free and commercial (paid) versions - the difference between the two is often minimal, but if corporate paranoia can fund free software, then that sounds like a good deal all round.

In order to add some higher customization level in this matter, in a way that (I believe) wouldn't require such a heavy development load, my suggestion is to add a new toolbar with customizable buttons. In the same way you can (now) customize and assign tasks/functions to keyboard shortcuts, users ...

Having just spent the last couple of days fighting to install Avid's "Pro Tools" (possibly the closest thing to an "industry standard" for recording software) I shall have to disagree strongly against the idea that Open Source Software is in any way more risky than closed source....
