Changing the name does not change the format. It may work with Windows Media Player, but WMP is weird

That's exactly what happens if you try to import an unsupported file type, so my guess is that your "MP3" is not a real MP3 format file, but some other unsupported format.
Try downloading 1.3.12 from download page. Then install FFmpeg
