Re: 16 v 24 bit noise floor
For 16 bit data, there are 65536 discrete values. For 24 bit data there are 16777216 discrete values. If you have a 16 bit sound card, each sample value will be one of those 65536 values - in effect, the digital representation of the analogue wave will move in tiny steps with a maximum resolution of...

Re: Only one channel
Rats - there's a lot of places that this could go wrong. Try this: plug the cable (with adapter) into the computer, but not into the mixing desk. Set Audacity recording, and touch the tip of each free 1/4" jack in turn (repeat a few times). This should give you a stereo recording, with a bit of...

Re: File formats & data loss?
On Windows with Audacity you are limited to 16 bit recording with any version of Audacity. Eventually the 1.3 (or later) version of Audacity will be able to support recording at greater bit depths, but not yet. This does not affect 24 / 32 bit processing or playback (which are supported by Audacity ...

Re: Digital "jukebox" to feed the analog stereo?
Steve, that streaming gizmo is very nice but it is only half of what I need. Sure, it can stream the contents of a whole storage device to the tv/stereo--but it offers no provision for CHOOSING what will play. It apparently just dumps the whole storage device to the output. I've not looked at those...

Re: 16 v 24 bit noise floor
No, it applies to Audacity (all versions).hellosailor wrote:Interesting, does that apply only to version 1.3x? I thought 24-bit was available for 1.2x under Windows?
Windows 24 bit support will not be added to Audacity 1.2 as all development is in the 1.3.x branch.

Re: Wish List - GUI designer module
The advantage (and possibly "only" real advantage) of rotary controls is that they take up less space than sliders, which is useful for effects that have a lot of parameters.

Re: File formats & data loss?
Worth noting that not all players will support 24 or 32 bit WAV files (and many CD writers will not accept them), though it is easy on all platforms to convert 32 bit WAV files to 16 bit.

Re: 16 v 24 bit noise floor
Audacity uses the cross-platform library "Portaudio" to access the computer sound system. The version of Portaudio that is currently used in Audacity is hard coded to 16 bit audio for Windows. (see here: http://audacity.238276.n2.nabble.com/24-bit-recording-on-Windows-td2505042.html#a25050...

An alternative option is to use a "Multi-Media Hard Drive Enclosure"
