Windows may be applying a "Noise Cancellation" effect to the sound before it reaches Audacity. Look carefully through your sound card settings to ensure that no effects are enabled. The settings may not be easy to find and you may need to go into the Windows Control Panel to find them.

The selection must be made on one of the actual tracks and not on the time ruler. If you try to make a selection on the time ruler (at the top of the tracks window) then that is telling Audacity to play the region that you "selected". Another possible cause could be if you are inadvertentl...

Have you used one of these devices yourself? Does the device record the local user on one channel of the recording and the remote user on the other channel, or do both voices get mixed together?
