Plug in the USB and allow time for Windows to recognise it BEFORE you open Audacity.
When you open Audacity, go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices and set the "Record" device to the USB option.

The problem is not with getting music to the computer from a record on the turntable - that works fine. Yes that was my understanding - Sync-lock would be enabled, but not selected as the default.
