if I try to change format to 32 bit, it closes the software and gives me an error msg That's another issue that we can look at later, but upgrading to Audacity 1.3.12 may fix that. FREE SPACE : 190 MB TOTAL SIZE: 11.2 GB That's running pretty close to edge. Windows machines should have at least 10%...

You are trying to import a file type that is not supported. If you upgrade to Audacity 1.3.12 and install FFMpeg many more file types are supported. Audacity 1.2.x is very old and no longer supported. Upgrading to Audacity 1.3.12 is highly recommended. I have changed already the options to >recording in mono instead of stereo (on the Audio I/O tab of Preferences) and in 16 bit instead of 32 bit, but I still get same msg I'm not sure why that is ...

Have a go with Freeverb3
"Calf Reverb" is pretty good, but the sliders don't work in Audacity, but you can use it with JackRack. (It's in the "calf-plugins" package in the Ubuntu repository)

If your computer is connected to the Internet (which I assume it is), check to see if it is possible to "roll back" the drivers for you sound card.
