Re: Cannot disable internal sound recording
Could you say what the exact settings are that you have in Audacity "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and also, what is set as the default recording and playback device in 'Sound' from the Windows Control Panel. Also, what sort of microphone are you using and how is it connected to the c...

Re: fails to launch on Windows 7
Have you tried running the audacity.exe file directly rather than launching Audacity from a link?

Re: Best way to record a bass track
I currently have Audacity 1.2.6 installed but it sound like I should be upgrading to 1.3.x. Is that fair comment? Yes. Audacity 1.3.12 is the recommended version for Vista (and arguably the best for all other computers) I have no microphones as such and was hoping to be able to plug straight in (on...
Re: Bitrate
For Vista / Windows 7 you should use Audacity 1.3.12 http://audacityteam.org/download/ You will also need to install "Lame" so that you can export as MP3 http://audacityteam.org/help/faq?s=install&i=lame-mp3 Re-compressing an MP3 always produces a loss in sound quality. To minimise the...

Re: Breaking up a file
After you have imported the file, zoom out so that you can see the whole of the track. The time is shown in the ruler immediately above the track window.

Re: Clipping or Distortion on Vocal High Notes of Ripped Aud
Would it be possible for you to post a couple of seconds of your Edited recording to the forum? I think attached files need to be no more than 1 MB, so that will allow up to 6 seconds in WAV format (3 or 4 seconds from a section that sounds distorted in your car will be enough for us to tell if the ...

Re: Exporting to 24bit
Sorry jerryct, my previous post was typed in a bit of a hurry, and reading it back I see that it is not very clear. As you will see by this Wikipedia article, this subject is actually rather complicated: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floating_point With signed 24 bit data, there are 16,777,216 discre...

Re: Exporting to 24bit
I think you got it whomper. Dither is not applied when exporting 32 bit audio to 24 bit, but the conversion from 32 bit float to 24 bit is only accurate down to the lsb. why do i not have any problems with 16bit data? because with 16 bit the data is just being rounded to an exact integer every time ...

Re: Problem importing large files
I can see your logic, but the gains may not be as great as you might imagine. Because of the relative slowness of disk access, Audacity has been designed to minimise the time spent reading/writing to disk. There will be some gains, for example if importing a large MP3 file, but for many processing t...
