Perhaps the microphone is picking up the sound from the speakers. Try turning the speakers off and using headphones.

audacity.cfg is in:
/home/<user name>/.audacity-data
Because the folder name starts with a dot, it is hidden by default.

It's usually called "Stereo Mix" or "What U Hear" and it depends on your sound card and sound card drivers.

At the bottom of the Transport menu, select "Overdub" and De-select "Software Playthrough". Those are the correct settings for Audacity. The other settings that you may need to pay attention to are your sound card settings. If you are able to record sounds that are being played ...
