Thanks neomega702, that's also what it says in the Audacity documentation.
There's also some other tips for when that doesn't work:

Re: Latency help!
I need to hear both the backing track and the new one throught the headphones. Is this normal that it does not? Floyd It's normal not to work with USB microphones. It's quite common not to work on Vista, It's very common not to work on Windows 7, but with a conventional (non-USB) microphone on Wind...

Re: Isochronic Modulator Plug-in
Did you previously install Audacity 1.2.6?
I think you've put it into an Audacity 1.2 plug-in folder.
Look to see if you have another Audacity folder.
The usual location of the Audacity 1.3 plug-in folder on Windows is:
C:Program FilesAudacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode)Plug-Ins

I'm currently thinking along these lines:
Re: input
Looking deep into my crystal ball I'm guessing that you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7 with the wrong version of Audacity and you haven't read this: (Vista) http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Windows_Vista_OS (Win 7) http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Windows_7_OS You can download Audacity 1.3.12...

Re: Improvement of Auto Duck effect
I don't think that Markus is currently active in Audacity development so I don't know how you would contact him. Are you aware of the "Envelope Tool"? http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Envelope_Tool For now at least you could use the Auto Duck effect to make most of the changes (processin...

Re: low volume level in MP3
This doesn't make sense. An exported WAV file should sound virtually identical to playing the Audacity track.
Do you still have Audacity 1.2.6 installed? If you do, could you check that the problem is not also occurring there.

Re: low volume level in MP3
If you export as a WAV file, does that sound OK? Before you export, look in the bottom left corner of the main Audacity window. There's a number in a box and it says "Project Rate (Hz)" above it. What's the number? When you export as an MP3, on the Export Dialogue screen (where you enter t...

Check at the bottom of the "Transport" menu and ensure that "Sound Activated Recording (on/off)" is NOT selected.
