Re: How good does a tape deck need to be?

Also, the deck has an upper limit of 8khz Are you sure that's right? If it is, that will sound very muffled. The best cassette decks are capable of excellent sound, providing the tape and the recording are excellent quality, but such cassette decks are expensive and difficult to find these days. If...

Re: Compressor effect

Using a dynamic compressor to repair a problem in the original recording is a matter of compromise. A 5:1 compression ratio is fairly severe - it means that each "unit" of loudness above the threshold is being suppressed by 80% so that it only rises to 1/5th of a "unit" in loudne...

Re: low volume level in MP3

Yes I can hear it. I thought you meant much more noise than that. There is noise on both of those samples, though the noise on "silence 126.mp3" is noticeably less. The noise is created due to the conversion from "32 bit float" format in Audacity to "16 bit integer" in ...

Re: Sample Printer

The main thing from a programming standpoint is to see if I can remove the sample number limitation. I've just printed 10,000,000 samples (stereo). The file was only about 4 million samples long, so there are a lot of "NIL" results. Processing and writing the file took about 3 minutes and...

Re: Making TiMidity run

I figure the real expert on TiMidity, steve, is quietly watching to see how you are doing with my amateur advice. As you've used TiMidity on Windows for more than 20 minutes in the last 5 years, I think that now makes you the expert digi :D I do use Timidity on Linux, but it's quite a different bea...

Re: Miking a violin

We're using a passive direct box that's supposed to have a hi-Z input, but it doesn't say how high. My guess is "not very". I'd be interested to hear what it is. If I remember correctly my (cheap) graphic pedal is about 750k. For a while, she was using an instrument amp with a hi-Z input ...
