Re: Overlaying a track on another
I would highly recommend using Audacity 1.3.12 for this sort of thing. http://audacityteam.org/download/ Line the tracks up roughly first so they are about right. "View menu > Fit vertically" so that you can see both tracks as clearly as possible. Adjust the zoom level so that you can see ...

Re: VBR MP3 file creators?
The very latest version of Lame is v3.98.4 Audacity 1.3.12 uses Lame v3.98.3 There should be no problem using Audacity 1.3.x for your work. I find it extremely reliable. MP3 format is not recommended for archiving music collections as it is a "lossy" format that looses sound quality each t...

Re: Turning an mp3 into multiple files
"MP3Split" can split MP3 files without decoding them, so there is no loss in sound quality.

The vocalist can help through a combination of voice control and microphone technique. Vocalists will tend to back off from the microphone a little as they get louder, so helping to maintain a more even level. Beyond that it's down to a combination of "dynamic compression" and manually adj...

Re: Peak Limiter / Expander
The broadcast-limiter is not a compressor. Wikipedia disagrees. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_range_compression#Limiting Compression and limiting are not different in process but in degree and perceived effect. A limiter is a compressor with a high ratio and, generally, a fast attack time. S...

Re: Remove Limiting
I'm going "what's wrong with this picture..." If you experiment with some pure (sine) tones, "Plot Spectrum" gives a good indication of "what's wrong with this picture". Clipping, even soft clipping, produces loads of harmonics, and it's those that give the distortion ...

It's a tricky job, but the tool that you need is the "Sliding Time Scale / Pitch Shift" effect (in the Effect" menu).

Re: Peak Limiter / Expander
I may have saved you some time Edgar. I've rewritten the main compressor function, ripped out most of the nonsense, and it's a lot faster now. A 10 minute track now processes in 28 seconds rather than the previous 35 seconds. In comparison broadcast-limiter takes 24 seconds for the same (mono) track...
