In that case you just set your sound card to play sound from the line input.
Exactly how to do that will depend on your sound card, but a good place to start looking would be to open up the sound card properties in the Windows Control Panel.

Reducing the level won't change the shape of the waveform. That's true, but for some lossy compression audio formats (notably MP3) it is not uncommon for peaks to exceed 0 dB, and if the file is decoded to 32-bit float, then those peaks can still exist - not truncated, but extending beyond 0 dB. Any e-mail messages or notifications that are sent by or through the forum software will come from Buanzo, because he is the main administrator for the forum which makes him the registered sender for the servers mail system. Unless Koz has a really big secret, he is not Buanzo :)

My best guess is that it's gone an lost forever.
Automatic crash recovery is pretty good in Audacity 1.3.12, but power failure can be devastating. If automatic crash recovery does not work, then recovery is probably not possible.
