The usual way to make podcasts with music is to import the music tracks into Audacity, and record the voice on a different track. Check the sound card settings in the Windows Control Panel.
In particular, check the recording volume and switch off any "Advanced enhancements" (such as echo cancellation, noise removal, automatic gain...)

That's not an Audacity issue. Windows only looks at the drivers that are on your computer and any generic drivers that it has. It does not check the manufacturers web site- you should do that manually.

So how about adding those ghost lines to the vertical scale, would you still consider that option? It's not up to me :) but personally I find that in most cases I can judge close enough without horizontal rules.
