Check in the Windows Mixer (loudspeaker icon near the Time Date on your Desktop) that you have the recording source set to the line input and not to "Stereo Mix".

Try this test:
Record something with the USB microphone.
If the waveform is very small, use the Amplify effect on it.
Does it play?
If not, unplug the microphone
Does it play now?

It sounds like AUdacity 1.2 may not be able to handle your sound card correctly.

The odds are not in your favour, but what I would advise is that you make a copy of the .AUP file and open the copy in NotePad (it's a plain text file).
