If you import a bass drum sample into a new (empty) project and play it, do you get the effect?

Crash recovery in Audacity 1.2.6 is very primitive and not very effective. I'd highly recommend that you upgrade to Audacity 1.3.12 which will hopefully be less prone to crashing, but if it does it has much better automatic crash recovery.
