Probably the most important single feature is the room. If the room is noisy or echoey then it will be near impossible to get a good recording. A good lecturer will carefully pace their speech for best intelligibility, so I'm wondering why you want to time compress them. The reason will determine the best approach to take. The simplest approach is to use "fast forward" on your tape/cd player.

Check your sound card settings. You were probably recording from "Stereo Mix" (What U Hear) rather than directly from the microphone input.

If you upgrade to Audacity 1.3 (highly recommended) there is a manual included (in the "Help" menu), and there's a lot of Tutorials and other Tips available on-line (see links below this post).
