Not well documented is the prohibition against using filenames containing blanks. Audacity should be able to handle file names that include spaces. Audacity 1.3.12 certainly can. I agree that it's been a long time since the last release (about a year) and we all very much look forward to the release of Audacity 2. Sometimes there can be a lot of work go into a project with little to show for it in the short term.

Sound card settings are often to be found via an icon near the Time/Date on your Desktop.
If you can't find them there, look in the Windows Control Panel.

Probably best to throw out Audacity 1.2 (it's very old) and install Audacity 1.3.
