thereafter the lack of an IDE on Linux for Audacity makes life miserable! I'm not a programmer so I can't speak with any authority on that subject, but I've seen similar criticisms of Linux in the field of music production and it seems to come down to a difference in mind set between Linux and Wind...

A a test, could you try deleting the first track, then listening to just the second track and see if it still sounds "distorted". (You can us "Undo" from the Edit menu to reverse the track deletion). How big is the waveform on each track? Ideally the waveform should be about half...
