Re: Text output for basic visualisation
What I'm trying to do is create a basic visualisation for an animation, for this I need some way of interpreting the accompanying music. Whether it's the frequencies, decibels, or something else, I just need some way of getting a textual output of a piece of audio, preferably with a timestamp at ea...

Re: Audio Spectrum Analysis
The first thing is to upgrade to Audacity 1.3.13 as this new version will give you a lot more control (much better tools to work with). You can get Audacity 1.3.13 from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/ The "Plot Spectrum" window will generally give a more useful display if you set t...

Re: Ringtone volume
If apply the Soft Clipping Limiter, it gives the multiple red vertical 'clipped' indications across the track. The Soft Clipping Limiter will amplify the result right up to 0 dB, but not beyond. Because there will be samples at the 0 dB level it is likely that some "clipped" indicator lin...

Re: raw pcm speed is incorrect
As bgravato says. Audacity 1.2.6 only supports a very limited range of audio file formats and does not support M4A. You need Audacity 1.3.13 and FFMpeg After installing Audacity 1.3.13, here's a direct link to the FFmpeg page: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=FAQ:Installation_and_Plug-...

Re: Recording with USB microphone
"Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O"
Ensure that:
1) The output device is set to your normal sound card and not to the USB device.
2) "Play other tracks while recording new one" is enabled.

Re: Latency issue in 1.2
I heard something about Audacity(I believe the newer versions) isn't compatible with Windows 7, could that be the case? The compatibility issue is between Audacity 1.2.6 and any modern operating system. For any new(ish) computer the recommended version is Audacity 1.3.13. Windows 7 will often set t...

Re: CPU load and its effects
Jerky cursor movement can be caused by minor issues with the graphics drivers. It usually has no effect on the quality of the recording. If the computer is struggling to keep up with the data flow, the effect is usually a very obvious stuttering in the sound.

Re: equalization fails at the end
The shortage of memory could be a problem. Try rebooting your computer then run it again.
(as a comparison, this computer has 2 GB of RAM, I've just EQ'd a 40 minute track and memory usage is currently 16.2%, but I'm using Linux which is probably a lot more memory efficient than Windows 7).
