There's no compression - just simple linear amplification.

Audacity does not do "real-time" processing.
You could try it in "Wavosaur" (Wavosaur is not open-source, but it is free and supports VST plug-ins).

Unfortunately that does not tell us much. I get those messages on Ubuntu 10.10, but then Audacity launches and works correctly.
