You don't need a mouse with horizontal scrolling to use the Equalizer. What settings are you having trouble with?

But the Low Pass filter is not available for use in Chains, so the method that you have described with the Equalization effect is the way to go.

Try using a combination of the Leveller effect (to create distortion) and the Equalization effect (possibly the AM Radio preset) to limit the bandwidth.

If Suse does not provide any other means for doing so, try installing the "PulseAudio Volume Control" to select which input is used by PulseAudio for recording.
