Re: How Do I Extend A Note/Sound As Long As I Want It?

Re: What's Causing These Gaps In Sound?
You will find that happens with two effects: "Change Tempo" and "Change Pitch"
See the last paragraph in the Change Tempo section of the manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Change_Tempo

Re: Exporting Tracks to be mixed in another DAW
You seem to have the general idea of what to do. Here's a quick way to achieve it: Ctrl+A (select All) Home key (cursor to the start) Generate menu > Silence and select 1 second (insert 1 second of silence) File menu > Export Multiple and select "split files based on tracks" Edit: forgot t...
Re: timbre
I presume that you're talking about adjusting the "tone".
See here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Equalization
Note that this is for Audacity the highly recommended 1.3 version of Audacity which you can get from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/

Topic moved.
You need to select by dragging on the audio track (across the waveform) not the ruler at the top. (Dragging on the ruler is intended to do what you describe so that you can quickly preview any section of the track without selecting it).

Re: Artifact test
It's definitely interesting that there is such a noticeable difference with that audio sample, and I'm quite surprised that it sounds so bad on recent versions of Audacity, but as you say, you need to choose the right (wrong) kind of audio samples to show up the issue. Taking another example, with a...

Re: corrupt Zoom H4n file
Were you recording in 24-bit PCM stereo?
Have you tried importing say 1% of the file to see if you can get anything meaningful?

Re: Artifact test
"Time Stretch" effects (change pitch / change tempo) are work by chopping up the sound into little pieces, stretching them out or pushing them closer together, then sticking all of the pieces back together again. Exactly how best to do that is a matter of optimisation and compromise. I agr...
