It would be an incredible coincidence if this turns out to be the same problem that I had last week.

Which Linux distro are you using?
Have you customised the sound system in any way?
Do you normally use Audacity with Jack, ALSA, Pulse, OSS, OSS4?

Is the problem only when you have Jack running?

Before suggesting possible solutions, it would be best to run a few tests to try and pin down where the bottleneck is occurring. Are you up for trying a few tests or would you rather just stick with your current workaround?

For files that are already on your computer it is better to Import the file into Audacity. Yes Windows does have a software playthrough option, and in some situations it should be used, but if the system is not set up correctly it can cause these symptoms. Look near the bottom of the Transport menu and ensure that "Software Playthrough" is OFF (not selected).

No there isn't.
When the recording has completed you will need to manually Export the recording to create an audio file.
