Congratulations - got there in the end :D While you are recording, a peak level of around -6 dB is ideal. In the days of tape recording it was important to push the recording level as high as possible because the "noise floor" of tape was relatively high, but not so with digital recording....

There are a lot of alternative reverbs available for Audacity 1.3.13. I'd highly recommend upgrading: http://audacityteam.org/download/

I don't yet know what "the limit" is for the number of files, but on a modern computer with plenty of RAM it should be able to handle a lot. I'll need to do some stress testing. I agree that the lack of a file browser is a major weakness - now that would be a nice enhancement for Audacity ...

What is the actual file name?
Which version of Audacity are you using? (should be 1.3.13 - see in "Help > About Audacity" to check).

I don't think that there is a limit, but Audacity Projects over about 12 hours (mono) may fail. Loading extremely large MP3s will be very slow as Audacity needs to decode them to uncompressed audio data (that could be around 40 GB of data), write it to disk and calculate the waveform view.
