You are clicking too high. Click and drag on the actual waveform, not on the "timeline" ruler.

The problem is probably because the Mackie is using ASIO and the Windows release version of Audacity only supports MME, Direct Sound and WASAPI (and not ASIO). Are you able to identify what triggers the crash?

Can you generate a tone ("Generate menu > Tone")?
If you can, are you then able to play the tone?

Try doing a full reset of Audacity back to factory defaults. To reset Audacity, you need to shut down Audacity, then open (in the Windows File Manager) the hidden folder: C:\Users\<your user name>\Application Data\audacity\ and delete the three files: audacity.cfg pluginregistry.cfg pluginsettings.c...
