Re: Need tips on audio editing spoken podcast tracks
The microphone is probably the weakest part of the system but you should still be able to achieve reasonable sound quality. Use a pop shield so as to avoid "popping" on "B" and "P" type sounds. Use some sort of microphone stand so as to avoid handling noise. Use the onl...

Re: Compressor: shorter attack/release times?
The soft clipping limiter (like all versions of the "Broadcast Limiter") is a "wave shaping" effect. It looks at the instantaneous level of the waveform and if it exceeds a threshold then its level is reduced. Here you can see a sine wave before and after applying the soft clippi...

Re: contrast
Thanks for taking the time and trouble to explain.
I can confirm that there is a bug. The Contrast tool always analyses the bottom track of a multi-track project even if a different track is selected.
I've added a bug report to the official bug tracking system.

Please aim for too much detail rather than not enough - We can't see what you are doing so you need to tell us.

Re: Comparing two files...
"Quantitative data" for speech is an extremely complex thing, though you can learn a great deal just from listening.
If you want to get into the scientific analysis thing, here's a couple of links that might be useful:

I'm not quite sure that I followed what you were trying to say in the video, but could you check the full 3 part version number of Audacity that you are using (Help menu > About Audacity)

Re: Comparing two files...
You can import two files into Audacity and they will appear as two tracks, one below the other. You can then use the "Solo" button to listen to just one or other track while playing. Is that what you want to do? If so, I'd recommend going into "Preferences" (in the "Edit&quo...

Re: Adding a threshold to the equalizer
I've had a play with the the idea, using the Equalizer to split a sound into frequency bands and then applying clipping to one of the frequency bands. The effect is perhaps not as expected. Clipping produces a broad range of additional frequencies outside of the frequency range that the distortion i...

Re: Cross-Fade (revisited)
Thanks for the comments Gale. I think 52 characters are OK on all platforms. I've tested on Linux and Win XP but not on OS X, though I've seen screen shots of other Help screens that go a little beyond 50 Characters. The final text should really be tested as monospaced fonts are not used (on Linux),...

Re: How to reduce the wav file size in audacity 1.3.13
Thanks for this quick reply. However, Powerpoint, (2007 version), only accepts WAV files. I tried to embed a MP3 file, but it doesn't work, and in the help files of Powerpoint is mentioned that music should be in WAV format. The file needs to have a WAV header and file extension so that Powerpoint ...
