OK, its not the end of the word to press record and delete the silent beginning and end if all else works well. Yes.
Record or import the music track(s).
Record your voice track.
Adjust the level of the music track(s) - either the Envelope Tool or the Auto Duck effect may be useful for this step (see links in previous posts)

The easiest way is to start Audacity recording first, then when the recording is finished, select the silent part at the beginning of the recording and delete it.

Do you have the recording input set to the USB option in the Device Toolbar?

If that does not solve the problem, please give full details of your setup including model numbers. (too much detail is better than not enough)
