Re: Recording from "Mono" cassette tape
Note: you could create a mono version by just discarding one of the "stereo" tracks: split stereo to mono then delete one track. Because of the phase differences between the channels, that will probably be a better way to convert to mono than mixing the channels to mono (Tracks > Stereo T...

Re: 24 bits truncated to 16 bits...
I edited that to Edit Menu > Preferences: Quality in Steve's post. Oops  Thanks for correcting. But should I be changing the dither for "real time conversion" or "high quality conversion"? The "real time conversion" settings affect playback. Dither should normall...

Re: removing sibilant sound.
I don't know of anyone that has tried it but the Eiosis E²Deesser may not work in Audacity due to the dependence on the iLok or Syncrosoft dongle. Whether this causes a problem or not, Audacity does not support real time processing. It is more likely to be supported by Audacity 1.3.14 than by the ol...

Re: Bandstop.ny - Does not appear
I am running Audacity 1.2.6 on a Mac and have downloaded the Bandstop.ny plugin, I presume that you mean this one: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Nyquist_Effect_Plug-ins#Band_Stop_Filter Bandstop.ny is a "version 3" plug-in and so it requires Audacity 1.3.x I'll add a note to the web p...

Re: Recording from "Mono" cassette tape
The sound clips produced can be found here: http://alexome.com/audacity/ As I said, the stereo.aiff sounds loader, i.e. more accentuated all over. If the 2 channel track was mono then they would (or at least "should") sound identical, however your "stereo.aiff" file is not mono....

Re: Importing More than a Second
Your best bet is to upgrade to Audacity 1.3.14 here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_mac then try again. You will probably also want to install FFMpeg as this allows Audacity to support import/export of many more types of audio files. http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=FAQ:Install...

Bit off topic Yes it is ;) I'm not totally clear what you're asking but I think that you may be looking for Zooming and Export Selection . This section about Selection may also be useful. It's generally better to start a new topic for new questions so that the thread does not become fragmented and ...

Re: 24 bits truncated to 16 bits...
I see what you're doing and this is interesting because I've never tried this myself (I don't have a 24 bit sound card or Windows 7). When you export in an integer format, by default Audacity will dither the output. For your test, try disabling dither and see what happens. Edit menu > Preferences > ...
