Check that you have plenty of free hard drive space, specifically on the drive that Audacity is using to store the audio data.

Do you have the wxWidgets sample code installed and built? I didn't but I do now. Try the program built in: wxWidgets-2.8.12samplesfont use the menu item Select > Select Font...--it should pop up a font dialog. OK, done that: font-choose.png but still got the problem with sizeColorFamilyViaFontDial...

If it was working then suddenly not working, it could be that some other program has grabbed exclusive control of your sound system.
Do you run Skype or other voip type application?
Have you tried rebooting the computer?

Perhaps you have some security setting that is preventing the link from opening?

To find a file that is in the Windows Media Player library:
  • Click the Library tab, and then browse to the file you want to find on your computer.
  • Right-click the file and then click Open File Location.

The simplest "workaround" is to get into the habit of connecting the microphone before launching Audacity.
