I don't suppose that you can just have your other application "not maximised" so that you can see Audacity's Selection Toolbar at the bottom?

If you're using a USB turntable, try unplugging it from the computer before trying to play back.

You could try using the Equalization effect and select the "Telephone" preset. This will remove very low and very high frequencies and may make the recording a little more intelligible. I doubt that it will help much, but that's probably the most that can be done.
