Do you have "System Monitor" installed? I think it is normally included with Ubuntu.
If you do, with QjackCtl closed, have a look in "System Monitor > Processes" and see if jackd is listed.

When I open QJackCtl while the terminal is still open, it all works perfectly. Great, at least you have a workaround if all else fails.
