What are you trying to record?
Are you using a USB microphone? USB turntable? radio plugged into the Line In of a desktop computer? ....
Which version of Windows.
All we can say so far is that Audacity is not receiving an audio signal, or at least, not one big enough to show up on the audio track.

Re: TIP: Auto-Silence Length
In Audacity 1.3.x you can type the exact length required directly into the "Genhttp://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Audacity_Selectionerate Silence" interface. If the Generate Silence interface shows "seconds" but you need millisecond, or sample accuracy, click on the little downwa...

Re. the tutorial: He is using Audacity 1.2.6 which is now very old and not recommended as it has known problems on modern machines. Use Audacity 1.3.14 which you can get here: http://audacityteam.org/download/ An important step that he missed out from the tutorial is that you need to reduce the leve...

Re: RECORDED TOO LOUD
Some recording problems need to be avoided in the recording stage as they can't be repaired later. Recording something too loud will cause "distortion" and it will sound "crunchy and crackly". This is almost impossible to repair. A "horrible echoing sound" is usually a ...

It's a bad idea to post your email address on a public forum as it will tend to attract lots of spam to your e-mail account. Also, we do not offer e-mail support.

Re: It doesn't record - need help
You're welcome Dave. Hope you're not waiting too long for your lead :) Audacity is a very "capable" audio program, relatively simple to get started with, but very powerful when you start getting into the detail. Two ways that I have found that are really good for getting to know Audacity: ...

Modern commercial recordings are often very loud - some would say "too loud". Interesting article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_warPeatSki wrote: It's still not as loud as I'd like it as an mp3
