There are three drop-down menus in the Device Toolbar. What options do you have in each of those menus?

Does it still do it if you close and restart Audacity?

Do you need to run VST effects with Audacity?

It appears it was due to a spike of exceptionally high traffic to the web site.
Just as a matter of interest, there's been over 50,000 downloads of Audacity 2.0 in the first 24 hours of it being released.

If you import the MP3 back into Audacity does it play correctly?

How are you converting to MP3?
Which version of LAME are you using? Did you download it from a link on the Audacity web site?
How are you playing the MP3?

The problem appears to be with the server. It may be due to an unusually high load on the server while large scale changes were being made to other parts of the web site. If the slowness persists I'll investigate further.
