Does that output all occur when you launch Audacity, or does some of it occur only when Audacity freezes/crashes?

What options do you have in the Device Toolbar playback options?

So you mean (for example) "Biggles brass band.wav" ?
If so, then in this example "Biggles brass band" is the file name and ".wav" is the file extension.

If you record a mono track it will come out of both speakers, just like if you play a mono radio station on a stereo radio.
