If you have enough tracks you will probably have them collapsed or auto fitted so if you delete the Master Fader track, you won't be able to see the gain sliders move on the other tracks. It IS possible to fry a sound card's input circuitry with too high a level, though usually such damage, if it occurred, would be fatal (either no signal at all, or extremely damaged).

You may be able to convert the .MTS files to a supported format (such as WAV) using VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
