The only "distortion" effect that is shipped with Audacity is the "Leveller" effect.
If you use Windows you may be able to find a more guitar orientated VST distortion effect that will work with Audacity.
If you use Windows you could use "Guitarix".

Re: Audacity Fade effects
if I want to get the 3-section envelope in the current version i have simply to specify the start and end values and then to enter something like 3 (s) 50 (%) -2 (s) 70 (%). What could be simpler? That sets the standard. It must be no more complicated than that. With what I have in mind, the defaul...

Re: Audacity 2.x - More Resource Intensive?
Are either of those partitions automatically defragmented, compressed, search indexed by Windows, monitored for changes by a media player or backup service, or anything like that? It may be worth trying setting Audacity 2.0 to use the same temp folder as Audacity 1.2.6 (as an experiment).

Re: Audacity Fade effects
Q. Would a "text envelope" effect be sufficiently flexible if it had just three sections to the envelope? The Manual Duck effect fades from the initial level, to a new level (section 1), then remains at that level (section 2) before fading back to the original level (section 3). What I ha...

Re: Audacity 2.x - More Resource Intensive?
Just a thought, are both Audacity 1.2.6 and Audacity 2.0 use the same temporary folder or do they save temporary data in different locations? (see the Directories tab in Preferences)

"Broadband" means that there is a large (broad) range of frequencies. For example, a flute sound tends to be mostly a few distinct frequencies, whereas the sound of applause, rain, a chainsaw, or that "buzz" has a very much more complex mix of frequencies. Here is the spectrum pl...

Re: Audacity will not install
Searching Google suggests that you may have an anti-malware product that is "protecting" some of the files that you are trying to delete. One product that is mentioned a few times is AntiVir, though apparently other security products can also do this. You've not said what operating system ...

Re: Audacity freezing/crashing
Unchecking the "use RAM" box under Audio Cache seems to have solved the import problem (which makes no sense when I have 16GB of ram and I'm only importing a 1.25GB file, but hey, whatever works). The Audio Cache feature was designed to help users with old, slow hardware. It doesn't sound...

Re: Unwanted bouncing down of track?
In the transport menu, ensure that "Overdub" is selected (enabled) and "Software Playthrough" is not selected (disabled). Set the recording input to the Microphone option (NOT Stereo Mix). Do this in the Device Toolbar: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Device_Toolbar If you sti...

Re: Second life Backing tracks.
I have succesfully imported a backing track and recorded myself singing with it. That is the Audacity job done. Export that mix in a format supported by whatever other software that you use, and the Audacity task is complete. Audacity is a stand alone program and is not designed to integrate into o...
