The crackles are caused by occasional "skipping". It is not skipping by much, but enough to cause audible clicks in the recording.

We have made recordings in different buildings with the same equipment to record concerts etc, and though the sound has been present in parts ... The microphone is plugged directly into a serial port on the laptop. Do you mean the "USB" port? What is the make/model of the microphone? Could you post a short audio sample in WAV or FLAC format to illustrate the problem (See here for how to post an audio sample: http://forum.audacityte...
