"Truncate Silence" is the obvious choice, though note that if there are silences within the part that you want to keep, they may also be truncated. If this is a problem, then you will need a different solution.

To hear the sound from the USB device through your Conexant sound card you must enable "Software Playthrough" in the Transport menu. Setting up recording from a USB tape is basically the same as setting up for a USB turntable. See here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/USB_turntables#Set_...

The recording input device in the Device Toolbar needs to be set for "Stereo Mix". If you don't have that option, what options do you have? Sometimes "Stereo Mix" is called something else such as "What U Hear", but some sound cards just don't have the option to record s...
