I presume that what you are doing is "importing" the karaoke MP3 as one track in Audacity and then recording your voice to a new track?
If you click the "Solo" button on the recorded track, do you hear just the singing or do you also hear the backing track?

Re: Envelope Tool
Yes there is a "little downward-pointing black triangle" to click on, but clicking anywhere on the "track name" (by default it says "Audio Track") will do.waxcylinder wrote:click on the little downward-pointing back triangle (LDPBT) in the top right of the Track Control Panel

Re: No sound recorded in stereo mix
What do you have set as the recording input in the Device Toolbar? http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Device_Toolbar Do you use any other audio programs? In particular, do you use any other audio recording programs or "voip" programs (such as Skype). Have you recently installed any new pro...

Re: Creating backups
Yes the files can be imported into Audacity if required. If the exported WAV files are purely for back-ups (you're not expecting to need them but just in case of emergency), then exporting as 16 bit WAV should be perfectly adequate. To listen to, a backup that has been exported as 16 bit is likely t...

Re: digitizing 45 rpm vinyl
the thought occurred to me that there might be benefits in running the turntable at 33 1/3 for 45 rpm vinyl and adjusting the speed later with Audacity. An interesting idea, but probably not. There are several good reasons for not doing it (the RIAA equalization will be messed up, improper earthing...

Re: Creating backups
The best way to back-up individual tracks is to export them as "32 bit float WAV" files. 32 bit float WAV files will be very big, but perfect quality - identical to the audio in Audacity. The sample rate should be the same as you are using in the project (normally 44100 or 48000 Hz). 24 bi...

-1 for me too. For multi-track projects I need all the screen space I can get. If I want more than one project open I would much prefer it to be its own separate window,

It's called the Device Toolbar, but it's not going to turn a headphone output into an input.iwilliam wrote:There should be settings within audacity that allow you to choose the source of the audio input.

Re: new person looking for help
If you look in the Audacity "Help menu > Manual" the Audacity manual should appear in your web browser (in English).

Re: Can't export file as WAV, it alwasy goes to a data file
You need to look at the settings in your CD burning program. If "data disk" is selected in the CD burning program then WAV files will be stored on the CD as data files. If "audio disk" is selected in the CD burning program then WAV files will be stored on the CD as audio.
