SoX is a program. Like Audacity it is a powerful, general purpose tool for editing and processing audio. Thanks for everyone's input. Sounds like this may be impossible. One thing: it's not multiple instruments, voices, etc. It's only piano. Will that make a difference? If it is only one note at a time, there are "Audio to MIDI" programs that can do that quite well. It's been a few years sin...

Do the red arrows indicate where you want the splits to occur?
I don't know how much leading / trailing silence you want, so I've set 0.02 seconds as an arbitrary amount.

When editing, it can be helpful to select at zero crossings to avoid clicks at the edit points, however even then there may be slight clicks at edit points and the Repair effect can usually fix them. The Repair effect can be used on very short selections (no more than 128 samples) to fix small clicks.
