IC. So if I move the slider all the way to th left, any change/editing will apply only to the right channel, right? Try resetting the Audacity Preferences.
The easiest way to do that is to run the installer again and when you see the option to reset preferences, select it, then follow the on screen instructions to complete the installation.

Well I've currently got a fully updated Ubuntu 12.04 and Audacity built with all available "system" libraries, and the dsnoop messages and 12 second start up persists.
Now doing an upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10 to see if that makes a difference.

I think I get what you want to do. Try this: Add labels to each 2 second section that you want to keep Select the label track Edit > Labelled Regions > Copy Select the audio track Ctrl+V (paste) Delete the label track Note that the labels must not be touching each other.
