Re: How to record volume levels?

You can compare the levels of recorded signals.
You can't get an "absolute" measure of the level of a sound without a fully calibrated system.
Which are you trying to do?

Re: How do I search the manual?

Unfortunately the "frozen" 2.0.3 manual that is included with Audacity does not have a search function. However, the on-line development version does have search (http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Main_Page). There will be some differences in this manual as it is being constantly updated ...

Re: How do I monitor input?

You'll need to give more information. What / how are you recording?
What have you got working so far?
What equipment are you using?

Re: recording sound from specific application

Here's an example set-up recording Hydrogen drum machine and ZynAddSubFX synthesizer simultaneously into 4 separate tracks in Audacity with real time effects. (no special sound card required - I'm just using a Behring UCA-202) Normally I'd not have the screen so cluttered but would have each applica...

Re: Static and crackling when recording anything

There is something badly wrong with either your sound card or the sound card drivers. The blue wiggly line should be around the middle of the track (as shown below) not offset as in your screen shots. firsttrack001.png See here for how to check and update the sound card drivers: http://wiki.audacity...

Re: Recording mulitple parts of church service

Do you intend to do any editing of the recordings or are you just going to export it and put it on a CD (or do you have other plans)?

Re: recording sound from specific application

So how you do you record a specific application (but excluding other applications that are also playing sound) on Linux - JACK? Yes, I'd do it with Jack. To record from one specific (jack aware) application and not others: Start the application and check that it is using Jack, then rescan audio dev...

Re: File loss on upgrade?

I do have files stored in the Audacity folder. Audacity automatically stores works in progress in that folder and doesn't appear to give an option to store them someplace else. You shouldn't really store projects there. When you first save a project there is a "file browser" that allows y...

Re: File loss on upgrade?

By default Audacity is installed in "Program Files" Projects should not be saved in "Programs Files". Projects should be saved in your user space (for example in "My Documents" or in "My Music"), in which case it is safe to remove Audacity and existing project...

Re: Overlapping in FFT analysis

The selection of entire audio file is very easy in "CTRL-A" mode. There is no need to duplicate this function. It doesn't. Perhaps you have the "Select all audio in project, if none selected" preference option enabled: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tracks_preferences.html...
