Are you leaving the Contrast window open when you close the project? If so, are you sure that the contrast window is not hidden behind another window?

Try deleting the audacity.cfg file and then start Audacity. The audacity.cfg file will be recreated when Audacity successfully launches. The default temp directory should be: TempDir=/var/tmp/audacity-<username> (this should be set automatically unless an entry already exists in the audacity.cfg file)

Try ABR (select "Average" as the bit-rate mode), then set the bit rate to 32 kbps.
