Audacity uses Portaudio to communicate with the sound system. Portaudio does not accept greater than 16 bit from MME and DirectSound hosts, so regardless of your hardware, if you use MME or Direct Sound you will get a maximum of 16 bit. we do have Edit > Remove Audio or Labels > Split Cut ( or Split Delete) That is a reasonable workaround in some situations, but it's not a full replacement for a simple way to remove labels. We probably only need to hear a few seconds of the recording, so in Audacity, click on the wiggly blue waveform and while holding down the mouse button, drag to the right so that a few seconds are highlighted. The highlighted part is called the "Selection" (the "selected" audio)....
