Audacity uses Portaudio to communicate with the sound system. We probably only need to hear a few seconds of the recording, so in Audacity, click on the wiggly blue waveform and while holding down the mouse button, drag to the right so that a few seconds are highlighted. The highlighted part is called the "Selection" (the "selected" audio)....
