Check in the Windows Sound Control Panel and ensure that the device is set to record 2 channel stereo, then restart Audacity.

It's probably time to give your home-brew version a whirl.
If you find the problem persists, keep a note of exactly what you were doing at the time - if we can spot a pattern it may give a clue as to what is going on, but at the moment nothing stands out to account for it.

How much free RAM do you have?
Are you working in just one Audacity project at a time (one window) and one album (less than an hour of audio)?

Re: Sound vanishes during recording

The desktop computer is on our network with up-to-date virus protection Ensure that Audacity is installed locally on the computer and that you're not attempting to run it across the network. Also check that the Audacity temporary folder is on the local drive and is not a network drive (Edit > Prefe...

Looking at the 2.0.3 release notes , the following are listed as possible "freeze" issues: Files containing PCM audio but misnamed as MP3 cause a freeze or crash if an Extended Import rule is set in Preferences to force import of MP3 files using the MP3 importer. (Linux) After opening a su...

Re: Every 5 seconds I get a pop or noise spike.

Is Ubuntu up to date? Which version of Audacity? (look in "Help > About Audacity") Go into "Edit menu > Preferences > Recording" and set "Audio to buffer" to 200. Does that make any difference (better or worse)? What are the available options in Device Toolbar ?

Re: Shortening the length of a long track by a tiny fraction

You have posted in the "legacy" section. If you are really using an old (obsolete) version of Audacity you should upgrade. The current version is available here: http://audacityteam.org/download/ The following instructions assume a recent version of Audacity (not tested on obsolete version...

Re: Every 5 seconds I get a pop or noise spike.

When I use Audacity to record audio from a digital recorder or FM radio You mean a "real" radio - not software - connected to your computer somehow? How is the radio connected to the computer? I suspect that the netbook may not have enough processing power and may be glitching when too mu...

Re: Transcribing

have dictated a letter and exported it to a file so that it can be transcribed. I can access the file and can click on play to hear my letter but I can't load it onto a software transcriber. Do you know what format the transcriber software requires? What happens when you try to load it into the tra...
