That looks like a "side address" microphone, which means that you need to speak into the "front" of the mic, not into the end of the mic.

I normally use Gimp, but testing with Audacity 2.4.2 on Linux, I don't seem to be able to create a screenshot of only the topmost window (even if I'm quick enough). For example, I can't get a screenshot of the "Amplify" dialog or "Plot Spectrum".

Try saving the project, then close and relaunch Audacity, then make a test recording in a new project. Is it recording normally?

When trying to scroll horizontally, the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the window moves freely left and right. However, the tracks remain fixed and do not move. That sounds weird. If you click and drag the horizontal scroll bar, do the tracks move? If "Pinned Play Head" is enabled...
